One key to staying motivated to continue any exercise program is finding the type of exercise that matches your personality type. A hard driving CEO might enjoy training for marathons, while people more socially inclined might prefer taking a fitness class with other people.
Many people regard exercise simply as a means to an end, this end as often as not, being weight loss. There are many other benefits, which accrue from a regular exercise program. In particular --- EXERCISE CREATES HEALTH! Active people are less likely to develop chronic diseases. Regular physical activity performed a few days each week reduces the risk of premature death. The major killers, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic liver disease all fall dramatically among people who exercise regularly. In addition, moderate exercise is credited with helping to build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints. It helps control weight, and the incidence of arthritis is reduced. Exercise reduces feelings of depression and anxiety at the same time as promoting psychological well being. Exercise pumps extra oxygen into the brain and promotes mental function.
The three types of exercise we recommend are aerobic exercise, weight or resistance training and flexibility workouts.
